Alpine’s new PND-K3 GPS unit does it all, just like everybody else

15 August, 2008 – 10:35 pm by James

There’s nothing wrong with Alpine’s new £250 PND-K3 Portable Navigation System, which was first unveiled at CES this January, there just isn’t anything too stand-out either. The unit runs a 4.3-inch screen, sports maps of North America and related islands, includes a 3D view and 6 million points of interest, vocalizes turn-by-turn directions and street names, does Bluetooth hands-free and has moderate MP3 and WMA capabilities off its SD card slot. The “big” feature here is menu and map customization via 8 selectable color schemes, but the lack of live traffic info this price range isn’t winning Alpine any points. If you’re finding all this appealing, you should be able to pick one up as of today.

In-car charger presents four USB ports alongside cigarette socket

15 August, 2008 – 10:33 pm by James

In all honesty, USBfever almost nailed this one. The $22.99 in-car charger plugs right into your cigarette socket and gives motorists their cigarette outlet back along with 4 charging USB ports. The one (admittedly massive) tweak we wish it would’ve made? Replace that cig adapter with a traditional AC outlet. Yeah, yeah — that would make the whole thing a lot bigger, but you can’t deny that it would be way more useful. Version 2, anyone?

AVMap intros breathalyzer-equipped navigator

15 August, 2008 – 10:28 pm by James

Built-in breathalyzers haven’t become quite the mainstay that many other features have in GPS units, but it looks like they’re starting to become a bit more common, with AVMap only the latest to debut a navigator that promises to tell you if you’re fit to drive or not. Apparently, its new Geosat 6 Drive Safe navigator is a standalone version of the built-in option that was available on Peugot’s 107 “Sweet Years” edition car, with it boasting the same 4.8-inch touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth, and text-to-speech features as before. No word on a price just yet, unfortunately, and it seems safe to assume that this one will only be available in Europe.

Former MTV Star Quinton “Q” Dodson endorses innovative car audio manufacturer InPhase International, Inc.

Pimp My Ride

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - (Atlanta, GA) Nottingham England based InPhase International, Inc., a leading manufacturer of car audio products is bringing celebrity endorsement power from the U.S. to their latest print ad campaign by signing on Quinton “Q” Dodson, former star shop manager of MTV’s hit show Pimp My Ride.

“I’m excited to partner with InPhase because of their quality products and innovative design for true automotive audio enthusiasts,” adds Q the new InPhase spokesperson. “InPhase is changing the audio game with their new InPhase Pink line of amps, speakers and subwoofers.”

InPhase and Q connected after meeting at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year. InPhase was at CES to launch their new InPhase Pink line featuring pink colored high performance speakers, subwoofers, enclosures and amplifiers. Q was attending CES as an aficionado of after market customization and electronics surveying the latest products being introduced. Q gained celebrity as the shop manager of MTV’s popular car makeover show “Pimp My Ride” and connected with InPhase CEO about the opportunity.

“Our team is thrilled to have InPhase endorsed by Q an innovator that influenced the custom car industry through his work on Pimp My Ride, “ said Steve, CEO of InPhase International. “We have developed a unique print advertising and marketing campaign that will include Q with all of our brands.”

InPhase has invested in Q’s endorsement by engaging U.S. based marketing and advertising agency Nuance Marketing to develop a campaign around the endorsement.

“Steve is a unique CEO that has an intuitive grasp on connecting Q’s endorsement with compelling creative ads to create brand awareness,” said Edward Cates, CEO of Atlanta, Georgia based Nuance Marketing. “We believe that the InPhase campaign brings unprecedented creativity to car audio advertising and we are pleased to partner with such a visionary team.”

InPhase also has plans for an events marketing campaign that will feature Q at various shows and appearances in both Europe and the US.

“InPhase has top quality products across their brands including InPhase Pink and Black, DB Audio and Juice and they’re giving the people what they want,” adds Q. “I’m proud be down with the InPhase team and we’re going to do it real big.”

Sony Satnavs Offer Drivers Information On Petrol Prices

22 July, 2008 – 11:05 pm by James

Here’s a nice little idea from Sony to give its in-car navigators a bit of added appeal.

Upcoming devices as well as current models with upgraded maps will be able to offer information on petrol prices of local garages.

With fuel costs at an all-time high you can save quite a bit by filling up your tank at garages that charge a few pence less per litre, so getting this sort of information on the move, particularly if you travel a lot, could mount up to noticeable savings over the course of the year.

It’s unclear how well integrated this is at present, but much like many new tweaks and gimmicks on satnav devices, it’s rare to see one company produce something unique without the others following suit.

If you didn’t know already you can already check the prices of garages in your area from your computer using the PetrolPrices.com website, so if you’re keen to avoid paying over the odds you can try this out from the link below.

Satellite Navigation - The Not So Silent Killer

22 July, 2008 – 10:51 pm by James

Satnav’s are great little devices most of the time, making it easier for everyone young and old to work out how to get from A to B with a minimum of fuss. At least that’s what we thought. Despite improving substantially over the last few years in terms of clarity of directions and adding features like advanced lane guidance and text-to-speech for reading out road names, it seems as though some people are still getting it wrong. Pioneer issues firmware update for screwy AVIC F-Series navigators

22 July, 2008 – 10:41 pm by James

Just over a month after the internet got all fired up about the problematic AVIC F-Series navigators, Pioneer has come to the rescue (we hope, anyway) with a free firmware update. Aimed specifically at the AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F700BT, the update will reportedly “improve overall system performance and resolve certain software issues.” The outfit also notes that the AVIC-F500BT doesn’t need the upgrade, and even if your unit has been a-okay thus far, it still recommends applying the software. Take ten minutes or so and see what the latest firmware has to offer, and be sure to let us know if all (or some) of the kinks have indeed been ironed out.
