Google has just announced the inclusion of Google Maps Navigation for the next version of Android mobile phone OS.
It’s Google sat nav for your Android phone, and it looks pretty mind blowing. Unlike existing sat nav applications like TomTom which can easily cost you £60 or more. This bad boy is FREE.
Google Maps Navigation is an internet-connected GPS navigation system with voice guidance. It is part of Google Maps for mobile and is available for phones with Android 2.0.
Google Maps Navigation uses your phone’s internet connection to give you the latest maps and business data. On top of the usual turn by turn navigation and voice guidance, it also comes with these exciting features.
- Search in plain English – No need to know the address. You can type a business name or even a kind of a business, just like you would on Google.
- Search by voice – Speak your destination instead of typing (English only): “Navigate to the de Young Museum in San Francisco”.
- Traffic view – An on-screen indicator glows green, yellow, or red based on the current traffic conditions along your route. A single touch toggles a traffic view which shows the traffic ahead of you.
- Search along route – Search for any kind of business along your route, or turn on popular layers such as gas stations, restaurants, or parking.
- Satellite view – View your route overlaid on 3D satellite views with Google’s high-resolution aerial imagery.
- Street View – Visualize turns overlaid on Google’s Street View imagery. Navigation automatically switches to Street View as you approach your destination.
- Car dock mode – For certain devices, placing your phone in a car dock activates a special mode that makes it easy to use your device at arm’s length.

just a few days ago we had a Honda 1.6 Gold Wing, the bike from factory has a audio system which is Incorporatedinto the bike which after a long discussion with the customer he decided he wanted to upgrade his system, without adding a new stereo. Adding a bassbox and amplifier seemed like the best option, the bike had upgraded alpine speakers located at the rear storage box, so we through some rough ideas until we decided on the equipment we would use.
After the custom box was built ti fit in the rear compartment and enough room was left we then choose the suitable equipment. the Inphase XT08 was perfect for the box size and the IPA601 was small and powerful enough for the application.
after installing the amp and box we decided we needed away for the air pressure in the sealed storage box to escape so at the front of the box we cut a square hole to act as a port, this was later hidden by the rear seat, this allowed the bass to travel from the box to the riders seat perfectly.

Alpine has finally delivered a sleek, fully compatible GPS navigation solution for the head unit. The altogether simplistic NVE-M300 GPS Navigation Drive is a simple black box that measures just barely more than 4- x 4- x 1-inches and is designed to interface with the company’s top two selling in-dash AV head units: the iXA-W404 (4.3-inch display) and the IVA-W505 (7-inch touchscreen). The device features the outfit’s own OnPoint Advanced GPS Positioning, turn-by-turn guidance, a solid-state gyro sensor and accelerometer, text-to-speech and pre-loaded NAVTEQ maps. Unfortunately, this beautiful harmony has not been release in the UK yet.

You can now start planning your route before leaving the comfort of your home with the free NavGate FEEDS iPhone application, now theres a good idea!
You can use the Google Maps interface of your iPhone to find your destination and transfer it via Bluetooth to your PIONEER AVIC-F10BT or AVIC-F310BT.
Using this free App you can Run a point of interest (POI) search on your iPhone using Google Maps, drop a pin at the location and then send it to your Pioneer Sat Nav for automatic routing.

Paul came into my store requesting to change the speakers in his new Audi A4 saloon. I asked “Why?” he replied “they’re sh#t!”. After some more questions we established that he was comparing the car system to his home system-Bang and Olufson-and merely changing the speakers would not do much(if anything)* for him.
*(Think of your stereo/amp as a cars engine and the speakers as the wheels/tyres. Putting F1 tyres on your car will improve the grip (sound quality) but not the top speed (volume or SPL)-whereas putting an F1 engine in your car will improve top speed-but not grip, so ideally you change both)
I suggested putting in the PXE-H650 along with an amp on the standard speakers (having heard Alpine’s 5-Series demo car I knew what a difference just these items would make) and a separate subwoofer to give him the low bass response he was looking for. The quote, without speakers being changed, came in at £1500.00 which was more than Paul had been anticipating spending but he was confident in our abilities and faith in the PXE-H650 so he booked the car in.
He has a disabled relative, so needed to retain as much boot space as possible so as to be able to put a wheel chair in along with his audio system so we selected Alpine’s PDX-5 for the amp and Pioneer’s TS-SW3001S4 for the sub. The amp is full range digital-which in lay man’s terms mean it’s tiny and can be hidden away because it generates little heat. The sub is a special shallow mount driver so we were able to custom build a box the full width of his boot but only about 7” deep-so he could still fit the chair in.
The PXE-H650 was also hidden in the boot. This clever device goes in between the speaker outputs of your stereo and the inputs of an amplifier. It then enables us to get a very high quality signal into the amplifier and counter all the negative aspects of the standard stereo (Higher end factory stereos will automatically reduce bass output to prevent distortion in the standard speakers, making it very hard to get a “flat” signal for an amplifier to work with. With the PXE-H650 fitted the volume control is set on the stereo and you use a separate remote to raise/lower volume and subwoofer levels.) After giving us a flat output the real work begins-we position a mic in the driver’s seat and the PXE-H650 then works out how far each speaker is away from the driver’s ears and time aligns them. We repeat this in various other locations around the car so it can build a “map” of the vehicle’s acoustics. The PXE-H650 also measures the frequency response and then allows us to boost or cut frequencies so we get the flattest output possible-much like normal EQ’s but with a lot more control and you can see the results on a graph, making it easier to set up.
Paul was absolutely delighted with his system and has even volunteered his car for other customers to audition the system. He was particularly impressed with the imaging and new depth to the sound stage, the greater detail evident in the mid and high frequencies and extra weight to his favourite rock tracks, thanks to the subwoofer.

Car Audio centre Manchester is Happy to work on any vehicle, especially something out of the ordinary, we recently had the privlige to work on a 1960s mgb, the owner wanted to improve the sound but keep the appearance fairly discreet, we fitted an alpine cd/mp3 player and some pioneer slim fit speakers, bringing the car right up to date.
