Sony's just dived into the world of ICE that's in-car entertainment for the uninitiated and its landed on both feet and pulled off a double lutz and triple toe-loop at the same time.
The XAV-W1 is its first stab at the aftermarket in-car ents game and it's a beauty, dominated by a 7in 800x480 touchscreen.
The oversized head unit is designed to slot neatly into newer double DIN bays that are twice the height of your standard car stereo hence the large screen.
It'll play your DVDs, DivX movies, WMAs, MP3s and CDs, as well as your doubtless huge collection of SACDs. 5.1-channel surround sound is supported with Dolby Digital Surround and DTS Digital Surround Processing.
Naturally, you can also plug in a console or portable music spinner and hook up a rear-view camera for spotting bollards before they kiss your bumper. Um, there's even a karaoke mode just perfect for those long journeys. Oh dear, look, it's broken. What a shame.

The Sony XAV-W1 sports a powerful internal amp and extensive soundshaping to start you on your way to an impressive mobile theater system. You can add a gaming console or video camera to the Sony XAV-W1 using any of the 3 audio/video inputs, and you'll even find an input for a karaoke microphone.
Dedicated inputs allow you to connect a Sony navigation system or rear-view camera. For more entertainment, you can add Sony's iPod adapter XA-110IP. You can use the built-in multi-channel decoder and 6-channel preamp outputs to send signals to a full-blown amplified surround system.
