VW T-5 Headunit Upgrade Guide

Where to start?!  VW T-5 Headunit Upgrade Guide

I think this article has been a long time coming. This is aimed at current and prospective VW Transporter owners. We have experienced a massive surge in the last few years of prospective and current Transporter owners looking to upgrade their headunit and have done eventually. The standard offering by VW is rather rubbish and lacks the modern touch. The customers I have helped, haven’t looked back since.

If you have one of these units, an upgrade is needed. (these are the standard T-5 radios). Go on treat yourself…

One of the reasons I am recommending an upgrade, is modernisation of in car connectivity is on the rise. Whether its Bluetooth that is helping with handsfree calling (so you are not touching your phone) or you are wanting to listing to your favourite podcasts on a long-haul journey. We have it all to suit your needs. Below I am going to go through your choices when looking to upgrade your stereo. This will help you choose what suits you best.

Mechless Stereo (No CD) to upgrade from the standard VW T-5 Headunit-

Mechless stereos are becoming increasingly popular due to their short body and ease of use. The mechless stereo features an all-digital feature where no CDs are needed. These will be the future. But I know there will be a few old timers who can’t put down the (What’s the Story) Morning Glory or the Abbey Road CD! I say old timers, but at the tender age of 23… I do enjoy Oasis!

Some of my recommendations for upgrading your VW T-5-

Classic single din design with Bluetooth, USB and AuxPioneer MVH-S520BT

Keep it simple with this upgrade. Add the simplicity and quality your vehicle stereo is lacking. The Handsfree free function with AD2P streaming surpasses OEM quality and keeps you within the law. Boasting a high-speed USB input and an AUX input, you aren’t short on connectivity.

Classic single din design with Bluetooth, DAB, USB and Aux- JVC KD-X451DBT

Same as the above but with crystal clear DAB/DAB+ radio. You really cannot go wrong at this price point.

Modern double din touchscreen with Bluetooth and DABKenwood DMX125DAB

The DMX125DAB brings modern design and functions to the Volkswagen Transporter T5. Boasting a shallow body, touchscreen, Bluetooth and DAB. To top this off, it has Android USB mirroring for apps like YouTube and Google Maps. These features make the unit an ideal candidate for someone looking to add connectivity in the Transporter with a modern look.

Modern Double Din Apple Car Play/Android Auto Upgrade – Kenwood DMX7017DABS

The DMX7017DABS is an advanced smartphone stereo upgrade. The unit utilises the Android Auto/Apple Car Play platform to create a hub of connectivity in the form of a headunit. Other features included Bluetooth, Hi-Res Audio and DAB/DAB+. This unit, I have found is the most popular due to its connectivity features but also the price point. If you do not need inbuilt navigation, this is for you! (you can access Google Maps with Android Auto and Apple Car Play)

Modern Advanced Navigation with Apple Car PlayKenwood DNR-4190DABS

The DNR4190DABS combines advanced smartphone connectivity with Garmin navigation. This system also features DAB Radio, Bluetooth, HDMI and Rear camera input.

Remember folks, none of these units feature a CD drive! For units with a CD drive see below!

Stereo with CD drive to upgrade from the standard VW T-5 Headunit-

The classic stereo with just a CD player… how times have changed. It has been years since Bluetooth was introduced on a headunit, which at the time was a marvel of technology. Now it is a standard feature, although its quality and reliability are ever improving. DAB was a feature to come along, which revolutionised the way we listening to radio stations, with more stations turning over to DAB every year.

These days it is hard to find a head unit which doesn’t have these features. For me, I use Bluetooth quite a lot. Whether it is hands-free calling or streaming music. It has become an integral part of many different technologies which may or may not be for the automotive industry. Anyway, before I start blabbering on about the history of car stereos, have a look at the below for my recommendations on car headunits for your VW transporter.

Modern Advanced Navigation with Apple Car Play- Kenwood DNX5190DABS

This Kenwood unit, I have fallen for to be honest. I love it’s advanced features like the Garmin and Inrix systems. The Car Play and Android Auto features. This unit is festered with advanced features, not only that, it looks absolutely awesome when fitted. This is a unit I recommend for any car. It has also got an HDMI input for media devices or screen mirroring. A feature not regularly found these days on a headunit.
